American Women Made Red Dirt Progress In 2009; American Men Slide
Four American women advanced past the first round in both 2008 and 2009, but Serena William’s quarterfinal appearance at the French Open this year helped the US women mark forward progress in singles as last year no US woman made it past the third round. In Women’s doubles, seven teams with an American pro advanced vs. five teams in 2008. In addition, in 2008 two American women advanced in mixed doubles, but not past the third round. In 2009, three American women advanced including finalist Vania King (w/Melo) & Champion Liezel Huber with Bob Bryan.

American Men
The American Men, however, advanced five US singles players in 2008, five US men’s doubles teams and two mixed doubles teams. Although Bob Bryan won the mixed doubles for the second year in a row with Azarenka and then Huber, no other American male advanced in the mixed doubles draw. In the singles draw, only two American men advanced past the first round vs. five players last year. Lastly, although the Bryan’s advanced to the semifinal this year vs. the quarters last year, only two other teams advanced, when four other men’s teams advanced in 2008.
