First Round Australian Open Highlights of American Hopefuls
Cramping and Hrbaty take out John Isner from the 1st round of the Australian Open and Patrick McEnroe disagrees with Isner’s statement that the cramping was not a fitness issue.
Amer Delic advances in his 9th match played down under over countryman Taylor Dent. Roddick advances easily in his new lean form, Blake also stayed true to his game overpowering Canadian Frank Dancevic.
Mardy Fish came back strong after dropping the first set to Samuel Groth. Mardy closed strong 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-5, 6-0
Robbie Ginepri, Robert Kendrick and Wayne Odesnik, Sam Querrey, Bobby Reynolds and Spadea were all eliminated.
Both Williams solid as they advance to the second round.
Christine McHale went down 7-9 in the third with almost a full body cramp creating a lively debate by the entire ESPN crew on the cramping rule which Gonzales also used. Gonzales’ medical time out was a turning point in his victory over Hewitt.
Craybas was up a break in third, but lost out and young Melanie Oudin also was not able to break past the 1st round.
