Venus Williams Into Rome Semis To Take On Safina; #1 Huber & #2 Raymond Into Doubles Quarterfinals
Serena Williams bowed out early in Rome to Patty Schnyder 2-6, 6-2, 1-6 thus eliminating the possibility of a rematch with Azarenka. Venus Williams, however, has secured her place in the semifinal vs. Safina and if Azarenka defeats Kuznetsova, Venus could have her chance to take on Azarenka.
Venus defeated Safarova 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, then Chakvetadze 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-3 and finally Radwanska in the quarterfinals 1&2.
Vania King was defeated by Kanepi 4&3.
Mattek-Sands defeated Wildcard Garbin in the first round, but was eliminated by Wozniacki 1&5 in the 2nd round.
Women’s Doubles in Rome:
#1 seed Liezel Huber (w/Black) had a walk over vs. the Bondarenko sisters and will meet Hantuchova/Sugiyama in the quarterfinals.
Julie Craybas & Julie Ditty defeated Bachmann/Henke 4&0, but were defeated in the 2nd round by Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez 1&1.
#2 seed Lisa Raymond (w/Peschke) defeated Jans/Rosolska 6-3, 7-6(4) & will meet Senoglu/Shvedova in the quarterfinals.
