In a heart breaking loss in front of a packed house in Miami, Andy Roddick lost to Roger Federer 3-6, 6-4, 4-6.  Roddick was aggressive and after saving three break points early in the second set, the stands were thunderous.  In the third set, the atmosphere was a combination of Davis Cup and US Open excitement.  Andy had a chance to break, but Federer held on and broke Roddick when Andy was serving to stay in the match at 4-5.  At deuce, Federer’s backhand hit the net and leaped over Roddick’s racquet to set up a match point.

Federer converted that one and only match point when Roddick came to the net with a very risky cross court approach shot that bounced up into Roger’s strike zone and as Roddick was moving to cover the line, Roger struck a perfect dipping cross court passing shot for which Roddick could not reverse his direction and the ball passed him as did one of his best opportunities to eliminate The Roger.

In the women’s quarter finals it was Williams Day.  Serena Williams started down 0-5 and after 3 doubles by Na Li, Williams came back to 4-5 before dropping the first set 6-4. Li’s ground strokes sailed just long when Li had a chance to break at 4 all in the second and Serena found form in the tie breaker allowing her to close out the match 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-2

Venus Williams defeated Benesova, 6-1, 6-4, to set up her Semi-final match with sister Serena.

Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan defeated Soares/Ullyett 7-6(1), 6-4. They will meet Fisher/Huss tomorrow at 1PM EST, on Court 2 followed by the Racquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears match vs. Raymond (w/Peschke)

In Mobile, Lester Cook needed 3 sets advance 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 6-3 over fellow American Michael McClune… Cook last month lost a tight first round qualifying loss to Flavio Cipolla, 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 5-7, at Indian Wells. Taylor Dent had a similar experience with Flavio Cipolla in Miami’s 2nd qualifying round last week, but Dent came out on top 7-5 in the third.
